A Notary prepares, witnesses, or certifies documents going abroad; often these documents will have been prepared by a foreign lawyer. These documents include powers of attorney, sworn statements, contracts, property papers, and certificates of law.
When taking on a client, Notaries must verify their identity, legal capacity, and understanding of the document as well as their authority if they are signing on behalf of another party such as a limited company.
Common reasons to use a Notary Public

- When getting married abroad
- When opening a bank account in another country
- Certifying translations of documents

What does a Notary do?
Why not go to a solicitor?
Unless a solicitor is also a qualified Notary Public, he or she will not be able to prepare, authenticate or certify documents for use abroad, meaning you will need to seek out a qualified notary.
